It’s gotten so bad that whenever I see a listing for French Provincial, I actually have to stop and think about whether that’s right or not. I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s done this, since a couple of people have sent me listings for French Provincial furniture!

I was already thinking to myself “I’m not sure I’ll be able to spell it right now that I’ve seen it wrong so many times!” Then I read your final coment and had a full on giggle fit. 🙂

I always thought it was “French Provencal” style, after Provence.

If so many people are trying to sell this style of furniture, then I’m assuming it’s no longer in fashion and no one wants it. No one really sees “French Prevential” in the Wanted section, correct? Is there really a market for this mid-70s, heavy-set furniture? Of course, this is what is going to happen to IKEA furniture 20 years from now.

Nah, 20 years from now the really cheap Ikea furniture will have fallen apart and been recycled/burned/thrown out.

It would probably be referred to as something pretentious; like Vintage Scandinavian Modular.

But hey, you have to give them credit for spelling “chest of drawers” correctly!

Yes, has there been a French Prudential chest of droors yet? Oh gods, did I just will it into existence by way of Rule 34?

It should rightfully be “chester droors” though. And if there’s french prudential chester droors porn on the Internet, I’m pretty sure don’t want to see it.

With all these various permutations of Provincial, I’ve started to find myself forgetting what the original word is supposed to be. Whenever you add a new attempt at Provincial to the blog. I have to really think about it now… “What’ is it supposed to be? I forgot…”

The correct spelling is, in fact, Provençal, from the Provence region of France. Let’s just agree that pretty much nobody knows that, though.

Yup, “Americanized” to Provincial. I don’t even want to think about how bad spellings of Provençal would be.

I found “French Provencal” (without the cedilla, but still) on my local Craigslist. I also found “Provençal,” which is presumably “Provençal” after having been gnawed on by the Internet squirrels.

Which would make a bit more sense if it rendered as “Procen&ced;al” after being massaged through a text box or twain.
Then, when the string gets passed to a html-linked text box, the ampersand gets reinterpreted each time, so it starts looking like “Proven&ced;al”

Looking at magazines in the check-out stands at the grocery store, the new in style will be Tuscan. I can’t wait to see what Sparky does with that. Anyone placing bets on Toucan or Tuxan?
