    There’s something very sweet about this ad, but there’s also something very, very wrong about it as well.

    Young Bachelor in Need

    Hello my son is 24 and moving into his very first own place today. He just came out of a nasty relationship and is a bachelor. I am with my husband who is a truck driver and we will not be home for two weeks to help. He has no furniture, and any good clean furniture would be appreciated as well as household items including fans , blankets pots, pans etc that no one needs anymore. He can pick up. ( Pictures, comic books old dvds that will keep him busy and u no longer need dvd player anything). He works full time so he is not a slouch, its just rough for young people, and I am not home to help him move or set him up so i feel bad. We are not asking for charity. He can work for good furniture or work out a payment schedule if the items are cheap and things he likes and needs. He is a good boy. He has no bed or living room couch or chair at all and no blankets or fans. I am sure any food donations would also be appreciated.     It’s nice of Tony’s mom to try to help out her son, but … ma’am, Tony is 24 years old. He needs to be able to figure out how to do things (like go to the Salvation Army or use Craigslist) on his own now. At some point he’s going to walk into his new apartment and say to himself, “Self, I’d like to sit down but I don’t have any chairs. How can I rectify this situation?” And rather than having his answer be, “I know! I’ll call Mom and see if she has any chairs, or any idea about how to acquire them!”, he SHOULD be able to figure out how to acquire chairs on his own.

    Your son is almost a quarter century old — why are you asking people for comic books or old dvds to “keep him busy”? (Is it wrong that I’m tempted to send a “Thomas the Tank Engine” dvd?) Doesn’t he have hobbies? Friends? Or have you coddled this poor boy so much that he’s strangled his social life with your apron strings?

    I’d just like to point out that this person has a book out. I don’t have a book out. How come this person has a book deal and I don’t? I know how to use apostrophes. That should be worth something, right? More importantly, I’m not writing about roosters. Is there really a big market out there for poorly written and punctuated books about roosters? Because if I’m missing that lucrative market, I can certainly come up with something. I’ll just flail randomly at the keyboard and I’ll have a craptacular book about roosters written in no time.

    On a more serious note — how can roosters be twin brothers? Were they both hatched from the same egg? I’m pretty sure that’s scientifically impossible. As is the fact that this person has a published book out and that anyone will be willing to spend $36 for it. Not that I’m bitter or obsessing over that or anything.

    BTW, Cleo dies. He was trampled by sheep or something. It’s not quite the same order of spoiler as “Soylent green is people” or “He was dead all along”, is it? But I saved you $36. You can thank me later.

    I don’t know. The kid doesn’t look like a bulldog/pit mix to me. He looks more like a terrier/spaniel mix. Anyway, it’s a shame that these folks be throwin’ away a perfectly good white boy like that. (Warning: YouTube video, which is supposed to cue up to 2:51 but doesn’t seem to be doing so.)

    Note from drmk on this post: After thinking it through, I’m leaving this post up but reserving the right to delete comments on it, and also reserving the rights to turn off commenting if I decide it’s necessary.

    If I had known the back story on CWC I would not have posted this entry, because while his ad is certainly mockworthy for a number of reasons, he appears to have problems much deeper than sucking on Craigslist.

    A good question was raised by someone using the screen name Delabonte: “So it’s okay for you lot to make fun of sad people, but not us?” This made me think — what is the difference between this website and the wiki websites devoted to attacking CWC?

    I think the difference is that my intended focus on this website is on people’s actions — that is, the ads they write — and not the person as an individual. (I’ll admit straying from that, and the asshat tag is a prime example of targeting the individual and not the action.)

    In contrast, I find the malice against CWC on the wiki websites to be directly targeted at him as a person and way over the line, and that started to happen in the comments here.

    I don’t want that kind of attack to happen here. There’s a difference between saying, “This person did a stupid thing,” and “This person is stupid”. I try to maintain the former, while the group that has, for whatever reason, appointed themselves CWC watchdogs appears to favor the latter.

    Before anyone cries censorship, all I’m trying to do is to maintain the tenor of the blog as I intended it. One of the things I love about the people who are regular commenters on this blog is that you all tend to be brilliant, funny, and clever people, and I’d really like to retain that, as it’s what makes this blog special and enjoyable for me (and I suspect for others). Personal attacks are not brilliant, funny, or clever.

    Dan sends this one in, saying, “Notice the date. I can understand confusing Labor Day with Memorial Day, maybe. But … it’s the 4th of July! How do you get the date confused?”

    Maybe they’re just getting an early start on 2010’s Memorial Day celebration. See, it says it starts today and tomorrow — it doesn’t say when it ends. Besides, this was posted in w4m. They’re obviously looking for men with enough, erm, stamina to keep partying.

    Oh come ON, people. It’s the FOURTH OF JULY. It’s right there in the name. It’s not like the Fourth of July takes place on September 23rd or something. Nobody else could make that mistake, right? Right?

    4 Tall Standing Lamps – $20

    4 lamps for sale. 3 of them are identical (black lamp). I only have one of the yellow wooden lamp. All are functional. Buy all 4 for $20.

    Is it really necessary to post three of the exact same picture just because you have three of the same lamp?
