Shawna sent in this post, saying:

Overall, not a horrible post. It’s just… Well, first, the dress looks fairly bridal. I’m glad it’s not itchy at all, I guess. I feel COMPELLED to make a reasonable offer, perhaps after COMING BY to try it on. And you know, if I had “random people” chasing me down to snap photos, that would make me very uncomfortable. Also, who is the zoot suit creep on the lamp post? And why?

Finally, and most obviously, pay cash “and the top comes off”? Nice. That’s a motivated seller.

I’ll bet she did stand out at prom.

    [ /Shawna]

This post brings me to a question. I’m somewhat of a language wonk, if you haven’t noticed. Little linguistic things really interest me, like regional variations between pop and soda or bag and sack. It’s because the rest of my life is so exciting, I’m sure, that I focus on things like this in my down time.

Anyway, I know that in parts of the US the construction, “I went to prom” is more common, but where I grew up, I went to THE prom. Saying “I went to prom” seems to me like saying, “I went to store.” My husband says, “Ours had a qualifier — you went to Senior Prom or Junior Prom.” Even then, I would say, “I went to THE Junior Prom” instead.

I have a sneaking suspicion I’m in the minority; a Google search for “I went to prom” returns over 31,500 hits, while a search for “I went to the prom” returns a mere 19,000. Luckily, the Google search also returned this blog entry on the topic, which makes me feel a little bit better — I’m not the only person who overthinks these things.

How about you folks? Did you go to prom, or did you go to the prom?

And did you take your top off for cash at [the] prom?

Female front desk clerk to help me win nude bet

Hello, some friends have made a fun bet with me to stay at a hotel and lock myself nude out of my room and then have to go to the front desk that way to ask for a spare key. The bet is worth $200 and I would be glad to give you $100 of it to let me come down to the desk to win the bet. It is just all good, clean fun and hopefully would be a fun/funny story for you to tell afterwards. Please respond to this ad if you would be willing to help me win the bet, get a good laugh (and split the winnings). Thanks, Gary

If I worked at a hotel, I would agree to this … and then get in touch with Gary’s friends and tell them that for $100 more, I would pretend I didn’t know who he was when he came into the lobby naked, and refuse to give Gary the key to his room, AND let them record it. Wouldn’t that be good, clean fun? I know that would be a funny story for me to tell afterwards.

All right, hands up — who else thinks there aren’t actually any “friends” involved, and Gary has concocted this friends/bet story to satisfy his own weird fantasy?

This was found in the Food/Bev/Hosp jobs section by Sara — thanks!

    Wanted Raccoon meat

I want to buy a couple of dressed raccoon carcasses for a outdoors banquet. call Don xxx.xxx.xxxx

I’ve never been so happy to not be invited to something in my entire life. You see, this ad comes from a state that has recently been (and was currently, at the time this was posted) experiencing high temperatures of something like minus eleventy. An “outdoor banquet” doesn’t sound particularly appealing, much less one involving raccoon carcasses. In the meantime, there’s always this. Sure, you can’t eat it, but it would look nice and fluufy on the table!

This is a brand new never worn authentic Tiffany & Co sterling silver bracelet and necklace set. The retail value for this set is OVER $500. I’m lettin this set go for $300obo. Included are necklace, bracelet, 2 pouches, bag, box, and cleaning cloth! It’s Christmas so don’t miss out on this exclusive gift for her!

This item is available for pick-up only!!

There’s nothing really wrong with this ad itself, other than that there’s a little too much excitement! in! the! description!! But no, the hilarity comes elsewhere. Let’s look at the pictures, shall we?

    195b

That’s okay … it’s a good display of the jewelry; it’s tough to take a close picture in focus if you don’t have a good macro lens, so we can forgive that. Moving on …

    195c

Nicely displayed so you can see everything … but … what’s the display on? That’s not … could it be? No, it couldn’t, could it?

hot chic from ohio in my computer class – m4w – 33

hi we r in same computer class at [abbreviated college name] ..u said u were form ohio , mason i beleve near kings island..i think u r the most sexiest woman i have ever seen .. the way ur shirt help tight against ur body showin ur nice firm tits.. and ur sexy body i would love ot lick up and down… if u think u knwo who u r what was the teacher jking about if u ever hung out withteh guy that did what at kings island?.. hit me up maybe we can hook up discreetly and talk or whatever

Any way this turns out, this is destined for disaster.

First of all, let’s assume that the girl sees this. Who would go out (or “hook up and talk or whatever”) with a guy who wrote this? And by “write”, I mean, “randomly poked at letters on the keyboard in a vain attempt to communicate.” And if she does see it — how uncomfortable is she going to feel in that class now? It would be enough to make me drop the class and file a harassment charge and restraining order, honestly.

Let’s be charitable, though, and pretend that the girl in question is somehow charmed by his description and decides to let him lick her up and down. They marry. They breed. See? Disaster.

Now let’s assume that she doesn’t see it, and remains blissfully oblivious to his romantic keyboard single-finger stabbings. It’s still a symphony of fail, with a suck encore.
