For the love of all that is holy, people, it’s spelled dining. You have a dining room table for sale, not a dinning room table. Yes, you may have dinner, but when you have dinner, you are dining. In the dining room. On your dining table. You dine with others, you don’t dinn with them.

I couldn’t possibly post all of the offenders, but to illustrate my point, here’s a selection from the furniture listings from a large metropolitan area from just one day.

Oct 20 – Dinning Room Table – $100
Oct 20 – ITALIAN DINNING ROOM SET WITH MATCHING GRAND FATHER CLOCK – $99
Oct 20 – DINNING SET AND ENTERTAINMENT CENTER – $600
Oct 20 – Room With A View Dinning Table and Eight Chairs – $3000

Oct 20 – Dinning Table w/ leaf insert – $100
Oct 20 – Dinning Table / Bed, Dresser – $300
Oct 20 – Dinning table with four chairs in black color – $70
Oct 20 – **Moving Sale** Formal Dinning Room (Cherry Wood) – $995
Oct 20 – queen bed, side table, dinning room table w/ 4 chairs & full size sofa – $1000
Oct 20 – Antique oak dinning room table
Oct 20 – Dinning table Bristol table – $100
Oct 20 – Wood Dinning Table & 4 Chairs – $100
Oct 20 – Dinning Room Set – $300

Oct 20 – Pecan dinning room set – $850

Oct 20 – 7pcs dinning room set – $999
Oct 20 – Dinning room set& Buffet or best offer – $2100
Oct 20 – Oak Dinning Table with six chairs – $200

And I have to include this one even though it’s not from the 20th, because they go the extra mile:

Oct 19 – For sale Dinnning table with two charis And Love seat – $140

That’s right, folks, this dinning table has three n’s, not just two. It’s extra-n-tastic. They added the extra n in the middle like you’d add the extra leaf to the dinning table when the whole family comes over for Thanksgiving.  Although if they only have two charis, grandma’s going to have to sit on the floor.

I’m also fond of the CHASE LOUNGES. In my head there’s a stop-motion animation of two chaise lounges pursuing each other around a large room. (It’s a great movie. I wish you could see it.)

Maybe grandma could sit on the chase lounge while she eats at the dinnning table. If we could just get it to sit still long enough …

I hate to ruin a perfectly good righteous rant, but technically it’s chaise longue 😉

I rather think that was kind of the point.

Hey, my Americanization of it is much better than theirs. At least mine is “well-established”.

    And I can spell dining.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!! I absolutely abhor retarded spelling errors. I am a good speller, but my browser still spell checks anyways (catches a lot of dropped letter typos thankfully). I don’t see how this is so hard!

Actually Jackie, it’s chaise loUNge in North America (and our dictionaries as your source points out), but I do applaud you on your proper French. 🙂 Just like bleue fromage is just blue cheese here. I wish people had a little more culture, but we do live in the US.

Jackie, I think the misspelling of chaise longues was also being made fun of.

I thought you might also comment on the “GRAND FATHER CLOCK”. I’m familiar with grandfather clocks, but this is the first time I’ve seen a reference to a father clock, and a grand one at that!

Introducing the sparkii world of clocks is to enter yet another dimension of Perdition entire.
Something about variations on a theme of “granfarther” devices (with further twisted spellings pile upon that one).

But, if that were not enough, some of the anutieque and anteak devices will have convenient features like battery operation; or my favorite–“no moving parts” (we are left to infer whether tha means the device is only accurate twice a day, or if the weights and pendulum are decorative only).

Some of the listings for globe and mantle-top clocks are even worse for sweeping up the last debris from the erasure of the last faith in humanity and pitch them in the bin.

Oh, and lest one risk permanent mental injury, do not search out cuckoo clocks . . .

While the dinnning room set looks very nice, it’s really the two charis that I’m interested in.

Charis is a word after all. Maybe not an English one, but it is a word. It means Kindness in Greek. So… along with your dinnning room table, you get two kindness and a love seat.

    That’s a sweet deal.

Charis also means grace in greek, so maybe the seller will come pray twice for each meal you dinne on.

I just got 170 hits for “dinning” on washingtondc.craigslist.org. Several people spelled it both ways in the same ad. Please tell me that they did it that way on purpose to show up in more search results. Please.

Ok, “they did it that way on porpoise.”

      Oops.

Unless they have “Keywords:” in the body copy, I presume multiple spelling are much like the conception of the author–entirely accidental and unplanned.

Found 836 listings in Dallas CL for “keyword”; 731 for “dinning” <sigh>

And as I recall I think, we both kind o’ hated it
And I said well that’s, the one thing we’ve got

Grandma got run over by a chase lounge,
Dinning on Thanksgiving at our house,
You might say there’s no such meal as diner,

I partically like the antic chase lounges. You can set and lessen to you’re grandmaphone like your the Dutches of Whales, and you don’t need an otterman to putt your feets up. Ours is a Chip and Dale. Its a famley hairloom, but still in mink condition. It was organally oppolstered in purpel satan, but my morther had it recoved in a leppert prince. It is absolutly georgeous and a reel conversion peace.

Depressingly, I see “dinning room” frequently on floor plans for planning applications. Written by architects. You know, those people who have to study for several years to be qualified. There is no hope.
