This makes me want to cry. For the love of Martha Stewart, you over-incomed hipsters, learn to spell shabby chic.

Even worse, of course … they’re not alone. Click through to see more mangling of fake furniture styles.

If you do a search for “shabby sheek” on craigslist, there are eleven pages of posts — most of them expired — listing overpriced “shabby sheek” furniture. No, really:

  • Shabby sheek 4 drawer filing
  • 2 Shabby Sheek Couches, 1 pull out
  • Trellis Shabby sheek style vintage wood
  • Shabby Sheek vintage window w/ flower box
  • 2 Shabby Sheek Couches, 1 pull out
  • Vanity Shabby sheek Creamy white So pretty
  • shabby sheek dresser
  • shabby sheek king size head brd
  • NICE Shabby Sheek
  • ~~~SHABBY SHEEK HALL TABLE WITH 3PC ACCENT PIECES
  • Shabby sheek garden bench
  • Shabby Sheek Antique Nightstand.
  • Shabby Sheek Green Shutters
  • Shabby Sheek Style – decorative tin bucket, pitcher, planter box
  • Shabby sheek vanity & chair
  • Shabby Sheek Kitchen Table tile top Durable
  • SHABBY SHEEK KING HEAD BRD
  • Shabby Sheek vintage window w/ flower box
  • Hucth (White Shabby Sheek)

And of course this made me think … nobody could come up with anything worse than that, right?

Right?

Sigh.

Antique Shabby Sheik Wooden Trunk – $50 (East Boise)

Shabby Sheik Trunk! We bought this from an antique dealer but I don’t know that it is that old. It is light color wood that has been painted black, hence the shabby sheik part. It is 22 inches deep 21.5 inches wide and 41 inches long. We just don’t have room for it anymore. $50 firm… Come and get it!

I have to go lie down now; between my distress over sheek/sheik/shic and the vertigo from those last pictures of the dresser, I’m feeling a bit woozy.

Thanks, Christine, for sending in the shabby “sheek” post that got me going on this.

wherein chic/sheek/shiek/shic becomes “useless crap i dont want but am trying to pass off as shabby chic”

Believe it or not, I’ve seen it being spelled “shabby cheek”. *cringe*

I’m really concerned for that Sheik. Why is he so shabby? Why has he aged so badly? Why is he selling off his furniture?

You should see his camel-back sofa. And the whole 9-piece Bedouin set. He does have some nice sandblasted art items. Okay, okay, I will stop. 8)

Poor Rudolph Valentino, age has caught up to him and he’s just not pulling the flappers like he used to. But actually CALLING him the Shabby Sheik … a bit rude, dontcha think?

That is truly horrific. It made me a little nauseous. Thank you for making me want to weep for the future of the English language.

I’m surprised–no, SHOCKED–that the poster of the first ad spelled “decor” correctly. Also, I’m no expert on home furnishings but I think “shabby chic” generally means pastel colours and a light all-over patina of age. Therefore the black trunk with the giant chip in the paint is less “shabby chic” and more “beat-up piece of crap”.

I have now read so many repeated variations of the term “shabby chic”, that the words have lost all meaning to me.

Gasp–I missed the trunk just now!
It’s a ‘sheik’ because it’s from -Orient Boise! AND it was painted black,”hence the shabby sheik”
Even Skynerd knew when to get out of Boise….

At least the “shabby sheik” looks like indiscriminate acceptance of spell-check suggestions. We’ve ended up with “opera-rational objectives” at work that way. There don’t seem to be any other glaring spelling errors in that listing, so it’s possible they ran it through a spell-check.

    The others…. *facepalm*

Does shabby chic just mean old used crap.
That used to be my fashion style. Although i called it “thrift-store chic”

Slate blue? Silk Ivory? It sounds like they’re making up colors.

That first one is actually a very nice dinette set in “Country Cottage” style! There’s not much shabby about it, except that it’s used. Slate blue was an EXTREMELY popular (i.e., overused) color from the 80’s.

Have we seen any “chabby chic” yet?
